Discover the Beauty of Nature: 2024 Annual BioBlitz at Charles Allen Ouachita River Nature Preserve, 1497 Fisher Rd, Columbia, LA

The National Biology Honor Society’s Nu-Gamma Chapter at the University of Louisiana, Monroe, is thrilled to announce the eagerly anticipated 2024 Annual BioBlitz at the breathtaking Charles Allen Ouachita River Nature Preserve in Columbia, LA. This exciting event is set to take place on Saturday, April 20, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., inviting participants of all ages to embark on a thrilling journey to explore and document the astonishing biological diversity of this pristine preserve nestled within the Ouachita Hills.

The Charles Allen Ouachita River Nature Preserve is a hidden gem with diverse vegetation and ancient fossils, offering a living classroom for academic exploration and environmental education. A BioBlitz is a 24-hour event dedicated to cataloging the diverse array of species inhabiting a specific area. Led by ULM faculty, students, and local experts, participants will have the unique opportunity to delve into the wonders of nature, identifying a myriad of plants, animals, fungi, and more that call the nature preserve home.

The BioBlitz event was started in 2013 under the leadership of Dr. Joydeep Bhattacharjee, Professor of Biology at ULM,  as a means for documenting the rich diversity of the nature preserve.  Since then, this event has served as a dynamic platform for experiential learning, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of nature among students and citizens alike.  So far, the BioBlitz events have helped us document 230 species including 138 plants, 42 birds, 19 invertebrates, 13 reptiles, 7 amphibians, 7 mammals, 2 fungi, one slime mold, and one fish. We know that there are more species out there, so please join us in making the list grow.
